Keep the number true
Move
Move stock from one place to another, and know it arrived.
Filling a pick face from overflow, or shifting stock between buildings. Move records both ends of the journey as one act, so stock is never counted in two places at once, or in none. Refilling the front shelf from the back room forty times a day is the single most common reason a stock figure and a shelf disagree, and it is the one Move exists to stop. A driver who moves six boxes without telling anyone is the same problem at van scale.
For a business that refills a front shelf from a back room, or moves stock between buildings or vans.
What is on it
-
Where from, where to
Choose where the stock is and where it is going once, then work through what you are moving.
-
Only what is there
The list shows what is actually in the place you are moving from, and how many.
-
Both ends together
A move takes stock off one shelf and puts it on the other in the same act. The app refuses to record half of one.
-
Moved just now
What you have just moved is listed on the screen as you go.
How it works
- Choose where the stock is coming from and where it is going.
- Type how many of each product you are moving.
- Move it. Both places change at once.
What it does not do yet
A screen that looks like it did something it didn't is the worst outcome, so this is said here as plainly as it is in the app.
- Stock on a van between two buildings is not tracked in transit yet, so a long move is best recorded when it arrives.
Questions people actually ask
Why can I not move more than is on the shelf?
Because a move is one act with two halves, and letting the first half take stock that is not there would make stock appear out of nothing. The screen only offers what is actually in the place you are moving from.
What about stock on a van between two buildings?
It is not tracked in transit yet. Both halves of a move are recorded at the same moment, so a long move is best recorded when it arrives rather than when it leaves; until then the stock stays where it really is.
Does a move affect my sales figures?
No. Stock going from one of your places to another has neither entered nor left the business, so it counts as neither a delivery nor a sale. It is the reason a move is one act rather than a goods-out and a goods-in typed separately.
How is this different from just editing the quantity in two places?
An edit in two places is two separate facts that might not agree, typed at two different moments, by two different people, with nothing linking them. A move is one record: forty units left overflow because forty units arrived at the pick face, and the two numbers can never drift apart because they were never two numbers to begin with.
Is this built for a warehouse network, or for a few rooms?
A few rooms, a couple of vans, or a small number of buildings - which is most of what a small business actually has, rather than the distribution-network scale some inventory software is built and priced for. The mechanics are the same idea either way: a transfer updates both ends at once. What StockRoom does not do is route stock automatically between dozens of sites or optimise a delivery network - if that is the actual job, a system built for that scale will serve you better than we will.
