Best stock control software for a small business in Australia
Six options small businesses in Australia look at, side by side. We make StockRoom, so it is on the list and we say so; for each of the others we say what it is for and when it is the better choice. Where a vendor shows a price in US dollars we leave it in US dollars rather than convert it.
The six at a glance

StockRoom
StockRoom is for a business of about one to ten people. Adding a product takes one field, its name; cost, price, barcode and minimum can wait. Every change is recorded with who made it, when and why. It does stock and nothing else: finding what you have, counting it, receiving deliveries, working out what to reorder and what has stopped selling. It has no marketplace connections yet and no photo library. It is free for up to 50 products, then A$9 a month (Basic), A$44 (Solo) or A$89 (Pro), and the whole team is included on every plan. Prices are in Australian dollars. Start free or try the free stock count first.
Zoho Inventory
Zoho prices per organisation, with four paid plans from A$43 to A$384 a month billed annually, GST included. The free plan caps orders, users and locations, and add-ons cost extra: a user is A$12 a month, 500 more orders A$12, a location A$15.58 and advanced warehousing A$190.83, each billed annually. It is strongest if you already run Zoho Books or the wider Zoho suite. See StockRoom vs Zoho Inventory.
Lightspeed Retail
Lightspeed Retail is a point of sale system with stock inside it. Its Australian page shows three plans at A$129, A$229 and A$329 a month, each with one register included. The page does not say whether those are the yearly or monthly rate, extra locations and registers are priced separately, and the card-present payment rate it shows is 1.5% on all three plans. If you need a till, it is a different kind of product from StockRoom, which does not take payments.
Unleashed
Unleashed shows two plans in Australian dollars, Core at A$449 a month and Pro at A$819, or A$412 and A$751 a month when paid annually, excluding tax, with three users included on Core and five on Pro. Extra users are A$69 (Core) or A$79 (Pro) a month, monthly sales orders are capped with paid bands above, and one-off onboarding packages cost A$449, A$789 or A$7,999. Batch and serial tracking is listed under inventory. It is aimed at businesses far larger than most StockRoom customers.
inFlow
inFlow is a capable full inventory system with purchase orders, sales orders and fulfilment as one connected whole. Its pricing page shows four plans from US$99 to US$699 a month billed yearly (US$129 to US$879 billed monthly), a one-time onboarding package of US$499 on most plans, and US$29 a month for each extra team member. It shows no Australian dollar prices. If you have a warehouse, staff and barcode hardware, it will serve you better than StockRoom. See StockRoom vs inFlow.
Cin7
Cin7 shows three Core plans at US$349, US$599 and US$1,199 a month for new customers, excluding tax, stepping up in users, integrations and yearly sale orders, plus an Omni plan priced by quote. Extra integrations and order volume can be bought on top, and onboarding options are listed with no prices. There is a free trial but no free plan.
Stock control for a small shop
A small shop usually needs four things from stock control software: to know what it has and where it is, to count it from a phone instead of a clipboard, to see what to reorder before it runs out, and to see what the stock is worth. Start with the cheapest option that does those four, because a system with sales orders, production and onboarding fees solves problems a small shop does not have yet.
- No till needed, stock is the problem: StockRoom or Zoho Inventory, both of which have a free plan.
- You also need a till: look at Lightspeed Retail, and check how its stock tools fit your shop.
- You ship to customers from a warehouse with staff: inFlow or Unleashed.
- You sell across many channels and wholesale: Cin7.
What to look for in stock control software for a small shop
- Count from your phone, with barcode scanning. In StockRoom on every plan, including free.
- A count that shows the gap between the book and the shelf. Stock counts with the variance, on every plan.
- A list of what to reorder. A low-stock list in StockRoom from the A$9 Basic plan.
- What the stock is worth. Stock value and margin in StockRoom from the A$44 Solo plan.
- Your data is yours. A full export any time, including after you cancel, on every plan.
- No charge per person. Your whole team is included on every StockRoom plan.
Which one is for you? Four questions
- What do you need it to do? Know what you have, count it, and see what to reorder: StockRoom, Zoho Inventory or inFlow suit that. Sales orders, production or many sales channels: look at Unleashed or Cin7.
- Do you need a till? StockRoom records a sale to take the stock down, but it is not a payment terminal. If the till matters most, start with Lightspeed Retail.
- How many products do you have? StockRoom is free to 50 products, then up to 400 on Basic, 2,000 on Solo and unlimited on Pro.
- What is your budget? StockRoom starts free and the paid plans are A$9, A$44 and A$89 a month. The other prices are in the table above, read on the day shown.
